How it works

A simple, transparent flow from upload to insights. Follow the steps below.

1

Check you have a meter that produces half hourly usage figures:

Quickly identify what type of ESB Networks meter you have and if it produces the necessary usage statistics

If you go to your meter and can identify the "RM" number on it, if the RM is any of RM106, RM107 or RM108, then your meter is capable of generating half hourly usage statistics. Or if you know what your meter looks like, check the guide below:

Standard 24hr Meter

"Spinner" 24hr Meter or Day/Night Meter

This is the old style "spinning" meter, it may have one or 2 usage counters (single = 24hrs, double = day and night). This meter is read by ESB Networks 6 times a year (3 actual reads and 3 estimates), it does NOT generate half hourly usage statistics.

You cannot use this website to gain any cost comparisons unfortunately.

Day/Night Meter

Older Digital Meter

These meters may be set for either 24hr or Day/Night mode, but as above, they do NOT record half hourly usage statistics.

You cannot use this website to gain any cost comparisons unfortunately.

Smart Meter

Smart Ready Meter

These meters will have an RM number on them (just above the barcode) that is one of RM106, RM107 or RM108. These meters DO generate half hourly usage statistics. The meter may be using a SMART plan, or it may be configured for standard 24hr or Day/Night usage. If you check on your bill, the MCC code listed on the first page indicates:

  • MCC01: Standard 24hr mode
  • MCC02: Standard Day/Night mode
  • MCC12 or MCC16: Smart mode

You CAN use this website to look at cost comparisons.

Only the Smart Ready Meter above is capable of generating the usage statistics necessary, if you have any other meter than that shown above, then you cannot get half hourly usage details.

A note about Usage Statistics

ESB Networks manages the usage statistics from your meter.

In the next step, we'll explain how to download your usage statistics from ESB Networks, but before we do that, there are some important points to note:

  • CSV format only. Make sure the file comes directly from ESB Networks.
  • Date Range. Depending on how long your meter has been installed, the usage statistics may not go back that far. Ideally they should cover at least 12 months. Our cost analysis will tell you how much data days your file covers/
  • Less than 12 Months. You can still upload the usage statistics, but the resulting costs may not reflect a full years costs (for example, if they don't cover winter months your average may be less than what you actually will use)
  • Very Short Data files. If the file only shows usage for a few months or weeks, then the averages generated may not be useful. Our cost analysis will alert you if the date range in your file is very short.
  • Editing of Files. If you edit the files, we cannot take any responsibility for the results generated.
  • Unexpectedly small files. ESB treats these files as personal information, if the file data covers a shorter time span than you expected, this may be the result of changing the name on the account. You can change suppliers and the data will remain visible on ESB, but if the account name changes, ESB will "hide" any usage data prior to the name change.

Create an account on ESB Networks

You will need your MPRN (11 Digit number starting with 10) to complete this, it is printed on your bill (usually top left).

If you have created an ESB Networks account already, please skip to the next step

If you haven't yet created an account, please visit esbnetworks.ie (click the button below, it will open in a new tab) and follow the video below

To create the account you will need to use the exact name as is on your electricity bill and the same mobile number (or landline), for data verification purposes.

Smart Meter

Smart Ready Meter

ESB Networks will display 4 files (usually), the one you want is the one marked "30 minute readings in calculated kWh". This is the file you need to upload to our site to get an analysis of your costs and how you can make savings.
